(In Order of Appearance)
Decolonize
To move away from putting a primary focus solely on the history and traditions of those who colonized our current homeland and Church towards a more inclusive focus that uplifts the histories and traditions of all who exist within our homeland and Church (in particular Indigenous communities and the ancestors of the enslaved). This is less about just taking something away and more about adding and acknowledging the richness of God’s beautiful people.
Heteronormativity
The idea within a culture or community that everyone is heterosexual and that only their needs and issues need to be catered to and addressed (to the determent of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer individuals).
Cisnormativity
The idea within a culture or community that everyone is cisgender and that only their needs and issues need to be catered to and addressed (to the determent of trans and non-binary individuals). According to the HRC, “Cisgender” is: A term used to describe a person whose gender identity aligns with those typically associated with the sex assigned to them at birth.
Reparations
In this context, the act(s) of those within the traditional church to reach out in love and restoration through the returning of land and financial assets to Indigenous and/or Black communities due to the histories of colonization and/or enslavement. These are not meant to be acts of guilt, nor are they meant to be single moments of reckoning. Rather, reparations are meant to be done in relationship with the communities receiving them and to foster healing, hope, and a restoration of justice and equity.
Encuentro
A Spanish word that suggests a space of encounter and gathering that deepens our community. The term doesn’t quite have a direct English counterpart.
